I am a junior at Winthrop University, currently majoring in Illustration and also minoring in Spanish. I get scared sometimes about my degree choice because I like too many things, such as graphic design, various forms of art, astronomy, other sciences, etc. So I am working on straightening all of this out.
So the second project of this semester was a super bowl 2008 commercial story board. We had to either choose from a 30 second commercial, or a minute long commercial. Of course...being the person I am..I chose to do a one minute long commercial...and thus did one of my favorites that came out this year. The SoBe Life Water commercial with Naomi Campbell and the Dancing Lizards. They all dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller and it is just awesome. My project was 64 panels long, so basically I had at least one panel per second! Ummm and the lizards were fun to do! I used prismacolor markers on cartooning paper and then spray mounted it onto a nice tri-fold piece of white foam board.
A picture of that will be uploaded soon, once I get my project back. In the mean time...I'll post the panels!!
At my specialization review, all four professors were really digging the pop up aspect of my brochure advertising a tire inflating product. So naturally I thought this video (that i borrowed from my friend's blog...) was beyond fascinating!!! I went to Books A Million yesterday and bought three really cool books, one by Paul Jackson called The Pop Up Book which teaches you how to make them, one called Creating Books & Boxes by Benjamin D. Rinehart, and one called Books Unbound by Michael Jacobs... I really need to learn how to make books so that when i redo my projects for August's (or December's) specialization review...my books will be much improved!..and with the pop-up book..maybe i can put in a little extra to my portfolio for the review!! The department chair thinks that I have a lot of potential..I want to be able to further exemplify that.... :) These are my summer projects..I hope they will turn out how I envision them... I might do one of these for my senior thesis project......except maybe have more colors or maybe tell a story or something freakin' awesome.......or maybe i'll combine graphic design with illustration and even some spanish (all my interests so far at Winthrop) and make one awesome pop up, bilingual, well-designed, illustrated book!!!! LOL...how ambitious.... heh. If i want to do that...I should probably get started as of right now! lol...
I actually got through Specialization Review today at 12:30 pm!!!!! OMG I thought I was gonna throw up...crap my pants.....cry........have an anxiety attack......but nothing like that happened!!!!! i was just walking with puddles in my shoes.. lol... It actually wasn't that bad and we all find out if we passed or not tomorrow, which I know i didn't because i have to work on my craft...and the grid... :/
Gerry Derksen and Dave Brown told me to look through graphic design and illustration magazines, annuals, books, etc and make compositional thumbnails and use my analytical brain (because i told them i don't come from an art background, i come from an academic one) and analyze why each piece is effective. And then apply that knowledge to my own work.
Stokes wants me to look into paper mechanics because he was really digging my pop up tire on my brochure layout...and he said i should study more pop-up mechanisms and he might get me an interview with hallmark cards!!! lol!!!
And Chad was really interested that I do come from an academic background and that i don't know what i really want to do yet...and also that i have Spanish as a minor... heh. So i don't know what all that means...
Anyways...i got through it...and now it is time to focus on my actual exams!!! i have five exams to go!!!! Woot!!!!!!!!! The semester is almost over!!!!! Shyeah!!!!
Woot, I starred in one of my friend's videos for one of her classes! It was awesome... I get killed by a super happy teddy bear with an apple in its mouth and a creepy poster of Orlando Bloom in Pirates of the Caribbean... :) You should watch!
I couldn't post it on here because I don't have the original file. sorry! You'll have to watch it from my facebook page.
